YY's former assistant recalled two incidences from the past. She said because YY studied dance, so he did many fight scenes himself. Once during “the four” shooting. There was a scene where a very thin fishing line had to go really close by his eyes. It was really close that it only missed his eyes by a tiny bit of space. The other time was when shooting “Ultimate Conquest”. There was a scene when Bai NianSheng had to jump over a gate, the kind that had metal spikes protruding along the top edge. The fight scene crew were behind a wall on the other side of the gate. (not quite sure about the actual physical arrangement, but the fact was) the fight scene crew responsible of pulling the wire could not see if both YY’s legs had cleared the gate. What happened was the crew started to lower the wire (descend YY) when only YY’s first leg cleared the gate, so YY’s other leg got caught between the gate’s spikes. She didn’t say clearly if his leg got poked by the spike, but I think only got caught between the spikes. She said we couldn’t blame the fight scene crew, because they really couldn’t see. When the director said “cut”, she ran over to check on YY and she was scared to death… At that time, the director said “forget about everything. Let’s go to the hospital to check on his legs to be on the safe side.” But YY said, “don’t go yet! the set has already been built and everything in place, let’s finish this last cut then we can go to the hospital.” She said, at the end, there are things an actor should do, but very few could do it to this level. She didn’t want to talk about who respect his own work/profession more or not. But there are things she couldn’t do to that degree. So, she felt there are definitely some reasons (like this) why some people/actors can standout more than others.
