Youth Periplous Season 3: ep. 5 Partial Translation

https://youtu.be/OR8D-Kw2loI?si=0P7C2ZMvWV0y5HwF

*not sure whether it's better to use "give up" or "let go" for the activity they are doing. But when they talked about it, they also used "throw away" as the verb.

1:14:53
Soon you'll be stepping onto

1:14:55
a long road of life

1:14:56
Please consider carefully

1:14:58
then write down the top 5 things

1:15:00
you cherish the most in your life

1:15:01
Bon voyage

(skip some)

1:15:12
[In the long journey of life, what are the things that are most precious to you and cannot give up/let go?]

(skip some more....
They put the 5 items they wrote down on the cards in a box, then they started the journey.
In this game, they were asked to give up one thing from the box at every stop. After giving up that card, they'd turn off a light, symbolizing that he/she will no longer have that in the remainder of the journey. There are 4 stops before they reached the final destination with the one most important thing remaining in the box.)

1:17:37
Why do I think this is a bit....

1:17:39
dark

1:17:40
Hello

1:17:46
[too hard]

(skip more...)

1:18:26
[Restart life journey
what's the most important after all]

1:18:36~
let's talk about this
life journey
why we'd like to talk about this
because in the first half of this episode
we returned to 1981
So, now we are back to 2021
there are still lots of important things
on our life journey of growing
Let's share what you gave up first

1:18:55
I gave up my dog
relatively speaking
the reason why I gave up my pet first is because
some choices are
not made by you
because the there is a certain
life expectancy for dogs
I have to prepare for this in advance

1:19:09
I gave up my career
I think
no matter what, there should be a way to feed the tummy at the end
because I know the process of
slowly climbing up to the top
from the very bottom
as long as you are dedicated and work hard
there should be a way to survive
I think this is the most basic
I think there should be a way to come back
I think being able to stay alive is most important

1:19:32
I chose talent
I gave up my talents

1:19:34
For me
it was "relaxing/free and easy"

1:19:37
what was that?

1:19:38
"relaxing/free and easy" somewhat
symbolizes
freedom

1:19:41
Just being relaxed
Yes
Freedom
that's what it means

1:19:45
When was the last time
that you felt most relaxed?

1:19:48
The gala (performance/show) we just had (earlier in this episode)

1:19:52
He was so happy
and totally immersed in it
I saw him in the backstage
he kept reciting (his lines)

1:19:56
Hello everybody

1:19:57
I'm the MC for tonight's gala, Yang Yang

1:20:04
I recalled the old days in school
I miss the old days
when we performed together

1:20:10
really?
Our performances
have reached the level of PLA
right?

1:20:14
No, among all of us
only you didn't reach the level

1:20:20
Then, what was the 2nd one you gave up?

1:20:21
Happiness

1:20:22
YY just used a bubbly voice
Happiness

1:20:26
My throat felt a bit rough

1:20:27
Did you struggle to make the decision?

1:20:29
I struggled a bit
because I felt that
a lot of things are inseparable from happiness
For example, being healthy
also needs happiness
Or, like family/family bond/family relationship
friendship
they all need happiness
Actually
happiness
are not as important as
the ones I'm going to give up later on
So, I gave up happiness

1:20:50
It seems like the things you've given up tend to be
something that belong to yourself more
you tend to give them up more quickly and easily, right?

1:20:56
yes

1:20:57
When you were most busy in the past
were you working 365 days without breaks?

1:21:00
I basically only make one drama/visual work a year
and then I make myself free

1:21:06
Then, that's not bad

1:21:07
If, for example,
like,
a variety show
such as Youth Periplous
that needs to record once a year

1:21:12
[hiccups!]

1:21:16
[Does the hiccup imply something?]

1:21:17
That was?

1:21:17
No big deal. I had a hiccup [I didn't mean anything else]

1:21:18
The pressure is huge (with all the attention on his hiccups)

1:21:21
Two variety shows and one drama/movie
Is that a lot?

1:21:23
A lot

1:21:24
That's still too much (work)

1:21:25
[hiccup!]

1:21:26
[hahahaha...]

1:21:31
He was so scared.... (hearing the suggested work load)
One drama/movie in one year
plus two variety shows
(mimicking YY's hiccup)

1:21:37
[Post-processing: give you scissors; how about you make the final cut]
What's your suggestion regarding how to edit/cut this portion?

1:21:38
I don't know how to cut
[please let me go]

1:21:42
What did you do during the 6 months of resting period?

1:21:44
I came to record this
pretty much just recording variety show

1:21:46
Does this count as resting?

1:21:48
no wonder you were so relaxed
having hiccups like this

1:21:49
[intention exposed]

1:21:55
So, what you meant was that
when you are not making a drama/movie, that count as resting?

1:21:58
After completing a drama/movie
it becomes like a resting period

1:22:00
[you understand]
Then, the drama...
This drama...
I really can't continue anymore...
I really can't chat with you...
[hahahaha...]

1:22:06
YY

1:22:09
YY, are you having non-stop hiccups?

1:22:10
me, yes...

1:22:11
Then, what are you gonna do?

1:22:12
I don't know
I'll just take some time and it'll go away

1:22:14
(Yang Di tried to startle YY)
You need to be startled
my mom said so

1:22:17
[holding breath]

1:22:18
Didn't people say to
suddenly ask a different question?

1:22:19
I have the best method

1:22:21
[Youth Periplous encyclopedia of curing hiccups live discussion]
This is very effective

1:22:23
[holding breath to stop hiccups]
Hold your breath for a while
just hold it

1:22:24
(inhale)

1:22:27
it stopped
seems like it stopped

1:22:28
[personally verified its effectiveness]

1:22:30
Cheng Cheng?

1:22:30
The first thing I gave up with health

1:22:33
Health?
this...

1:22:34
Without this, how could you continue later on?

~1:26:16
(A quick summary about this segment.
The most senior ones like Bao Ge, Ling Jie, and Yang Di were all surprised Cheng Cheng gave up health first. Ling Jie thought it was probably because Cheng Cheng was still young and never really got sick before. Cheng Cheng was asked if he's the type that does not think living long is important? Cheng Cheng said yes. Then, Bao Ge shared his personal story about being diagnosed with liver conditions. For 3 years, he had been living in fear and worries. He felt so weak and useless. The applauds and cheers from the audience when he was on stage meant nothing to him anymore. After he removed his makeup in the backstage and drove home, he'd worry about his own health...etc. He often felt there was no more hope in life. It was like there was no light. But one day his good friend couldn't bear seeing him living in fear like this anymore and dragged him to another hospital to get a more precise diagnostics. Then, the doctor found that he was actually mis-diagnosed 3 years ago. He was actually really healthy! How fortunate! But he experienced the darkest fear people have when there are serious health issues. So, he wanted everybody take the importance of health seriously. Ling Jie also shared that when some elderlies told her to take care of her health when she was younger, she thought that was none of her business... But as she grew older, she realized it really is important. There is really a lot of pain when you get sick...etc. And Bao Ge shared his goal in life is to not have any regrets when he closes his eyes on his final day.

1:26:16
(the 2nd thing Yang Di gave up)
Career
career...
well
[pet, career]
there were ups and downs
career is only part of life
I feel, without career,
I could still continue to live

1:26:30
The 3rd thing I gave up was
friendship
[free and easy, happiness, friendship]

1:26:32
Similar to the "friends" that I gave up
[career, innocence, friendship]
We are in the same rhythm here

1:26:36
The 3rd one for me was also
emotional relationship
like friendship
love relationship
all included
[pet, career, emotional relationship]
they are all included in here

1:26:42
Because I think
those whom I really consider friends
these real friends
I don't need to give them any reason
from the moment I give them up
if the know about it
they wouldn't be angry at me
they would know
I must have my reasons
that lead to such a decision

1:26:55
And, in fact, you can't really throw away friends
you are not able to throw away friends
even if your good friends and you lost contact for years
when you see each other, you still feel very close

1:27:04
The 4th one I gave up was happiness
[career, innocence, friendship, happiness]

1:27:06
The 4th one I gave up was health
[free and easy, happiness, friendship, health]

1:27:08
Family
[pet, career, emotional relationship, family]
It's not that we really are going to throw away our family
Who would be so cold hearted
But because
we have to prepare ourselves sooner or later (to say goodbye to them)
This was a passive choice

1:27:21
Yang Di, what was your 5th one?

1:27:24
Self
[pet, career, emotional relationship, family, self]

1:27:26
this one is actually very high level

1:27:28
Because there are many things I cannot decide/control
I can't have it even if I want it
but
maintaining my true self
is something I think I can still control
I am really passionate about life/living
I think as long as a person is alive
good things will happen sooner or later
Other than life and death
everything else is not a big deal

1:27:42
Yes, yes, yes

1:27:43
If something affects myself
I'd talk to my friends immediately
let out all my feelings
If something happened to me
for example, some criticisms on the internet
I also like to speak up immediately
and tell everybody the truth is not like what they said
Jia Ling Jie?

1:27:55
look at mine (my last one that remained in the box)
emotional relationship
[talents, beauty, happiness, health, emotional relationship]
all the emotions in this world

1:28:02
that encompasses a lot

1:28:03
I am a person with very strong emotions
very intense
for example, you and I have very good relationship
to certain degree
I can be really really nice to you
always
But I would set a bottom line for myself
when you step over my bottom line
I will never ever forgive you

1:28:23
What's the last thing remaining for you, Xiao Tong?

1:28:26
What I kept was my parents
[steadiness, books and computer, good mood, pets, parents]

1:28:27
Xiao Tong's parents spent a lot of time accompanying her

1:28:30
Because my father previously
became aware about
his health issue
So, he was willing to spend more time with me
just being together with me
So, when I join a group, for example
he'd come to spend time with me
In the field of friendship
I really am a bit lacking
So, these (parents/family) become more important
especially my father and mother
they are very very important

1:28:49
it's like there's nowhere/no one else to share your feelings
only your parents
so you share all your feelings/emotions with them

1:28:53
Yes, everything, really

1:28:55
Family (the last one remaining in YY's box)
[free and easy, happiness, friendship, health, family]
same
family members
My situation is like this
I still live with my parents
even now

1:29:01
Do you communicate with them?

1:29:03
it still depends

1:29:04
There are definitely something you can't share down to every tiny detail

1:29:06
In fact, I think, we are like
the kind
that only share the good news, but not the bad ones

1:29:10
Do your parents watch your shows?

1:29:12
Yes
Just today, my parents were
posting those 15 sec short videos in the (SNS) group
one after another
Youth Periplous

1:29:16
They just kept recording (our show)

1:29:17
Our episode last night
They would record
15 sec...
short videos

1:29:22
Within the 15 sec
it should all be your cuts, right?

1:29:26
No
We were all in there
we were all in there

1:29:28
We were in the background

1:29:29
[Parent perspective direct recording]
Only our son
This 15 seconds
my son is in this segment

1:29:32
Variety show direct recording
When we show up, push the video (? not sure what he meant)

1:29:37
Then, do they like
such "variety show" side of you?

1:29:39
They were very happy
And I saw in those short videos (they sent)
my father was laughing out loud, you know?
yes, he was laughing happily
my mom was also laughing

1:29:47
A side they've never seen in daily life
got opened up
yes

1:29:49
No, in daily life
with my parents, I'm really more...
not so...
I am relatively more restrained...

1:29:56
More restrained?
More idol-like?

1:29:59
Idol? (laugh)
Playing an idol in front of his parents?
What a great question you asked
[speechless to the point of not even hiccups]

1:30:02
Mom, I'm going to take a shower/bath
Goodness~
You are so....

1:30:10
so good at following up a conversation

1:30:11
more idol-like at home
YY plays an idol at home

1:30:14
Mom, I'm done with shower/bath
like
running his fingers through his hair.... wet hair...
coming out like that
it's unnecessary, alright?

1:30:21
Mine is family
[career, innocence, friendship, happiness, family]
family
Like I said last time
Because I have formed
a concept now
Family is the most important after all
in my entire life

1:30:32
Then, the one
Cheng Cheng, it's your turn

1:30:35
Wow, I can't wait

1:30:37
Family
[health, courage, freedom, friendship, family]
The essence is actually the same
as YY ge's
and Bao ge's
Family
As I walked on this path
I tried to imagine
walking on the journey of my life
I think, at the end,
what's left is definitely
the person accompanying me by my side
that's the so-called family

1:30:53
You know? Wu Tong (director)
What we gave up and let go
will continue to change
on this journey
Maybe after 1 or 2 years
we...

1:31:04
We talk about this topic again here
the answers would definitely be different

1:31:05
[There is no fixed formula in life
everything is the best choice]
Yes, the things we give up will be different

1:31:09
will be different
Life is like a pendulum
gaining and losing

1:31:14
[Various kinds of lives, each has its own answers
The best scenery is always along the way]

1:31:16
Good that there is no such road
that really asks us to make such choices, right?

1:31:19
Goodness
that's too scary

1:31:26
What is it?
Why you kept staring at YY?

1:31:30
YY's hiccup has stopped

1:31:31
(hiccup!) <-- Did he do this one on purpose? Or, was this a cut added in post-processing?

1:31:35
I felt the recording of this episode went especially well
Have you noticed that?
felt very comfortable
very comfortable
I felt really relaxed these days

1:31:40
Probably because the topics were good

1:31:41
yes
indeed
What you said is true
really
Your smile...
The way you smile...
[Morning rain all over the earth today
Good friends' company is the warmest to our hearts]

----- The End -----

The first two things YY gave up showed me how yy would sacrifice his own happiness for things that he value even more. He values relationships between people. Friends and family are more important than his own happiness and FREEDOM! I think that’s so much to give up! But he tends to consider others (important ones, not strangers) first before considering himself. He's too nice… Oh, and remember his fans fall in the “family” category?

And “career” is not even in his top 5 list😅 That’s because he’s already successful with a very established career. I think if he were to do this 10 years ago, career might be in there. Anyway, like Ling Jie said at the end of the show, these choices change as people continue on the road of life. I really agree with that, because people's priorities change at different stage in life. Of course, there are things that wouldn't change. I think for many people, family is always the dearest to heart.
